ER308L TIG Filler Wire — Stainless Steel Strength with Enhanced Corrosion Resistance

ER308L is a stainless steel TIG filler wire (rod) designed for welding austenitic stainless steels—especially grades like 304, 304L, 308, and 308L. The “L” denotes low carbon content, which helps reduce the risk of carbide precipitation in heat‐affected zones, protecting the steel from corrosion between the welded grains.

Key Features

  • Low Carbon Content — Carbon is kept to a maximum of about 0.03%, reducing susceptibility to intergranular corrosion after welding.

  • Good Corrosion Resistance — Excellent for food‐grade, chemical processing, and architectural stainless applications where surface durability matters.

  • Stable & Clean Welds — Weld beads tend to wet out nicely, with good flow, minimal contamination issues, and pleasing bead appearance.

  • Compatibility — Works well with TIG in inert gas shielding (typically pure argon). It’s also compatible with various austenitic stainless base metals.

  • Mechanical Properties — Typical welds have good tensile strength, decent elongation, and toughness, making it suitable for structural as well as decorative stainless steel work.

Typical Composition (Approximate)

ElementTypical % Range
Carbon (C)≤ ~0.03%
Chromium (Cr)~19.5 – 22%
Nickel (Ni)~9.0 – 11%
Manganese (Mn)~1.0 – 2.5%
Silicon (Si)~0.30 – 0.65%
Other trace elements (P, S, etc.)Kept minimal to maintain cleanliness and bead quality

Recommended Usage & Welding Parameters

  • Shielding Gas: 100% Argon is standard.

  • Current Type: Use DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) for TIG.

  • Wire / Rod Diameters: Common sizes include small diameters (e.g. ~1.6 mm, ~2.4 mm, ~3.2 mm) depending on thickness of base metal.

  • Amperage Ranges: Depending on diameter and thickness, typical TIG amps might range from around 60–90 A for thinner rods/metal, up to 150+ A as thickness increases.

  • Application Considerations: Weld with clean base surfaces; avoid overheating; maintain proper interpass temperatures to prevent distortion or loss of corrosion resistance.

Ideal Applications

  • Welding 304 / 304L stainless steel items (piping, kitchen benches, tanks).

  • Food, beverage, chemical industry equipment where hygiene and corrosion resistance are critical.

  • Architectural and decorative stainless steel work.

  • Projects demanding clean welds with good mechanical integrity and appearance.
